The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) training unit has introduced a mandatory teacher training for school heads and teachers across all CBSE-affiliated schools. This new initiative is in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and aligns with the National Professional Standards For Teachers (NPST) to establish benchmarks of quality and accountability in teacher development.

As per the CBSE notice, under the annual Continuous Professional Development (CPD) mandate, all teachers must complete at least 50 hours of training each year. This includes 25 hours through CBSE or government regional training institutes and remaining 25 hours through in-house or school complex-based training.

The training will focus on the following key standards according to NPST:

Core Values and Ethics – 12 hours

Knowledge and Practice – 24 hours

Professional Growth and Development – 14 hours

In a progressive step to align with India’s expanding knowledge economy, CBSE has designated STEM Education (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) as the annual training theme for 2025.

The aim is to equip teachers with strategies to incorporate experiential, inquiry-based, and interdisciplinary methods into classroom teaching, as stated in the official CBSE notice.

The training programme is designed to support teachers in line with NPST standards to ensure quality teaching and improved student outcomes. The framework will also consider the broad CPD guidelines recommended by the NCERT, which recognize activities that are academically aligned with and contribute to the teaching-learning process.

CBSE acknowledges that evaluation duties performed by teachers in Classes 10 and 12 board exams and practicals, including development tasks such as research projects, presentations, participation in CBSE conferences, item development, e-content creation, CBP development, curriculum review, etc., will count as CPD hours.

To support this initiative, CBSE encourages schools to organise district-level deliberations (DLDs) on STEM education to create local learning communities where educators can reflect on STEM pedagogy, share best practices, and drive innovation. All schools and teachers are urged to actively participate in these initiatives to contribute to national goals within local contexts.
