K Jayaganesh became an IAS officer after receiving an All India Rank (AIR) of 156 in the 2008 UPSC exam.
While becoming an IAS or IPS officer may seem like an interesting career, passing the UPSC test requires a lot of hard work and the appropriate approach. Every year, thousands of applicants take the UPSC civil services exam, but only about a thousand of them pass the prestigious test in all three phases.
Some UPSC candidates have modest financial means, yet they nonetheless study hard for the test and go on to become IAS, IPS, or IFS officers. There is one such person who was a hotel waiter before passing the UPSC CSE on his seventh try. His name is Jayaganesh, IAS K.K Jayaganesh became an IAS officer after receiving an All India Rank (AIR) of 156 in the 2008 UPSC exam.
Jayaganesh was born and raised in the Vellore district in the little village of Vinavamangalam. His family wasn’t very wealthy. His dad was employed at a leather factory. In some way, the family managed to provide money for his studies. Jayganesh’s father used to get Rs 4,500 a month working in the leather industry. The oldest son in his family was Jayganesh. Therefore, he was also responsible for running the family expenses.
Jayganesh goal was to free his family from the bonds of impoverishment. He was an extremely bright student. Jayganesh did not act carelessly in this situation, even if the family was not in good financial standing. To refocus his life and profession, he studied assiduously.
Jayaganesh received a scholarship to study, and he completed the 12th board exam with a grade of about 92 per cent. After that, he was able to enrol in a mechanical engineering course with the aid of a scholarship. Having qualified as an engineer, he went on to work for himself. He then came to the realisation that many other families, just like his own, were having financial difficulties. He quit his work as an engineer and began his training to become a collector to support both his family and others.
To pay for the coaching, Jayganesh took on the job of a waiter and studied for the UPSC exam. Subsequently, he enrolled in a Chennai coaching institute. He lacked the funds to cover the costs of the fees. To finance his living expenses and the UPSC coaching fees, he began working as a movie theatre billing operator too. He used to receive a monthly salary of three thousand rupees there. He was not successful in the UPSC exam in 2004. He then quit from his position working in the movie theatre.
Jayaganesh was aware of the difficulty of the UPSC exam. He would need to put in more study hours to get ready for it. However, he was unable to quit his work and focus solely on his studies. He thus began serving customers as a waiter in a restaurant by which he had more time to study. Jayganesh failed both of his tries at the UPSC preliminary exam. He then began instructing sociology in a coaching facility.
K Jayaganesh is a patient and intelligent student, despite having failed six times. He took the UPSC Civil Service Examination six times and failed each time. Despite this, he did not stop. He continued his preparations. He was able to pass the UPSC Mains, UPSC Interview, and UPSC Prelims on his seventh attempt at the exam because of his diligent preparation. He rose to the 156th rank and was appointed as an IRS officer. He is currently serving in Chennai, Tamil Nadu and the Puducherry region as an Additional CIT (OSD).
